Malaysia international-school costs: fees and family budget

Budget for a Malaysian international school by checking tuition for the child’s grade, campus and entry year, then adding required charges, applicable tax, care, housing and transport. Separate full-year spending from initial cash and identify refundable deposits or tuition credits. These official 2026/27 examples and a MYR worksheet help build the complete plan.

Match the grade, year and fee basis first

A budget should name the child, actual campus, academic year and care model.

  • Ask the school to confirm the assigned Year or Grade. Different curricula’s grade labels do not automatically identify an identical age or learning stage.
  • Specify 2026/27 or the intended year, a full year or mid-year entry, day school or boarding, and the student category covered by the quotation.
  • Use Malaysian Ringgit (MYR/RM), naming annual, termly, monthly or one-off charges. Sum fees using the school’s actual number of charged terms.
  • Keep the quotation, inclusions, tax explanation, payment dates and refund terms. Prepare first-year and continuing-year budgets separately.

2026/27 fee examples: read the stage alongside the amount

These are base annual school charges for the stated stages, before applicable SST and additional entry, support, family-living or transport costs. They illustrate the fee basis; request a quotation for the child’s actual placement.

School and applicable stageBase annual charge (MYR)
Marlborough | Iskandar Puteri, Years 7–8 day pupils141,300; 47,100 per term across 3 terms
Raffles American School | Iskandar Puteri, Grades 5–898,500; published annual tuition
ISKL | Ampang Hilir, Grades 6–8130,600; published annual tuition

Year/Grade labels, curricula, inclusions and care models differ. This is not a quality or price ranking, or the fee range for all Malaysian international schools. Each amount covers only part of the budget.

What needs checking beyond tuition?

Record required and optional spending, refundable funds and tuition advance payments separately.

ItemHow to check and record it
Application, registration and entryConfirm per-child versus per-family, payment date, first-year versus annual, and handling if entry or withdrawal plans change.
Learning and language supportObtain the required services and charges after the child’s assessment. Check tuition inclusions and termly versus annual billing.
Exams, materials and devicesCheck external exams, books, uniforms, required computers and activities. Separate required purchases from optional choices.
DepositsRecord refundable/non-refundable status, purpose, top-ups, withdrawal notice and deductions. Show initial cash separately.
Payments credited to tuitionShow the earlier payment in the cash schedule; count the total annual tuition once if the amount is subsequently credited.
Meals, transport and family livingCheck which meals, travel or laundry school/boarding fees already include, then add the uncovered costs.

ISKL states that its Enrollment Deposit is included in annual tuition and credited to Semester 2. The word “deposit” does not automatically identify an extra refundable sum.

Worked calculation: avoid counting the same payment twice

Use a new ISKL Grades 6–8 student to illustrate school-fee arithmetic. Only the two named charges are totalled; other required costs and family living remain separate.

StepAmount or treatment (MYR)
Annual tuition130,600
First-year student registration59,000
Two-charge subtotal before tax130,600 + 59,000 = 189,600
Enrollment Deposit10,200 is included in annual tuition and credited to Semester 2; do not add it again here

If both charges are taxed at the school page’s stated 6% SST, with no applicable exemption in this example: 189,600 × 6% = 11,376, giving a two-charge total of 200,976. Ask school finance to confirm the individual tax scope and any exemption.

The 200,976 figure totals those two charges under that assumption. It is not a complete study budget or first invoice. Check support, exams, devices, meals, transport, housing and family processing, then schedule cash using actual invoices.

How should boarding and tuition be combined?

Establish whether the published boarding figure is a school-fee package or a separate accommodation charge.

Marlborough | distinguish the fee models

The 2026/27 Years 7–8 schedule lists annual day-pupil charges of 141,300, Day Boarding of 193,200 and Full Boarding of 219,600. Compare the applicable school quotation rather than adding the day-pupil and full-boarding tables together.

Raffles American School | separate accommodation and deposit

The schedule separately lists annual double-occupancy boarding at 47,000, single occupancy at 62,000 and a 3,000 boarding deposit. Boarding includes food and laundry. Combine the applicable accommodation charge with tuition and show deposits and applicable tax separately.

Confirm ages, places, weekends, holidays and care/transport during boarding closures. Record uncovered or optional spending; use the student’s actual boarding agreement to check the purpose and refund conditions of payments.

Budget for family housing, care and transport

Get quotations for the proposed home and actual routine, record the spending period and avoid repeating included items.

  • Family housing: rent for the actual months, initial deposits, utilities, internet, moving and required purchases. Separate refundable deposits from living spending.
  • Meals and care: record the child’s and accompanying parent’s needs. Check what school meals, boarding or after-school care already provide.
  • Transport: request a bus or school-run quotation for the actual campus and home. Check normal dismissal, activity days, siblings and backup pickups.
  • Family travel and required processing: add intercity/cross-border visits, insurance and applicable arrangements. Confirm personal circumstances and charges with the responsible provider.

Check school-bus routes, places and charges individually. Use the Johor Bahru–Kuala Lumpur guide to review the routine. This page does not assign a universal living-cost amount without a family-specific quotation.

Check SST, discounts and currency transfers

Use the target school’s individual invoice to record taxable items, approved reductions and actual currency-transfer costs.

  • The schedules above include SST notes. Ask finance to confirm each item’s rate, taxable amount, applicable exemption and evidence. Do not multiply the entire family budget by a single tax rate.
  • For scholarships, sibling or advance-payment discounts, confirm the awarded amount, covered charges, continuation and withdrawal conditions in writing before adjusting the budget.
  • Build the base budget in MYR. If sending another currency, record the actual conversion quote, platform/bank charges, validity and amount the school must receive.
  • Confirm each school’s own payment rules; instalment or transfer arrangements at one school do not establish the terms at another.

Separate first year, continuing years and payment timing

Annual spending answers “how much is used”; the cash schedule answers “how much must be available when”. Both must cover school and family arrangements.

  • First year: separate one-off entry costs, refundable deposits, devices and moving. Mark included and subsequently credited payments.
  • Continuing year: recalculate using the next grade, current schedule, support, re-enrolment costs and actual family living; do not simply copy the first-year total.
  • Sort actual payments by application, offer acceptance, terms and other invoice dates. Ask about instalment approval and any additional charges.
  • Changes and withdrawal: record notice, refunds and deductions alongside the plan, including school transfers, support changes or ending a housing lease early.

Mark advance payments, deposits and included items consistently in both tables so a cash outflow is not mistaken for new annual spending.

Check the specific school, grade and academic year. The stated-stage 2026/27 base examples here are MYR 98,500, 112,950, 130,600 and 141,300 before applicable tax and other charges. They are not a national fee range. A complete budget adds support, care, housing and transport.

The first year may include application, registration, entry, devices and moving, alongside initial refundable deposits. Recalculate later years using the next grade, new schedule and actual support needs. Record final spending separately from initial cash requirements.

Read its purpose and terms. Refundable deposits may have notice and deduction conditions. ISKL’s Enrollment Deposit is described as non-refundable, included in annual tuition and credited to Semester 2. The label does not replace the terms or justify adding included tuition twice.

Check the fee basis first. Marlborough lists annual school charges for day-pupil and boarding models; Raffles American School separately lists accommodation charges. Ask what tuition, meals, laundry, transport and holiday care already include, then add the uncovered items.

Ask school finance to confirm the individual invoice’s rate, taxable items, exemptions and supporting evidence. School tax notes should not be applied automatically to family rent, care, transport or other spending. Sum the budget according to each item’s actual treatment.

No. The ISKL example adds MYR 130,600 annual tuition and 59,000 first-year registration for 189,600 before tax. If both have 6% SST and no exemption, the total is 200,976. It excludes other school and family costs; payment timing follows the actual invoices.
