Johor Bahru or Kuala Lumpur: schools and family planning

Choose between Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur by comparing schools that fit the child, then checking the actual campus, weekday care, travel and full-year budget together. Existing work and living arrangements influence the decision; each school must confirm curriculum, support and admission conditions. Build a shortlist around a sustainable school-day plan.

AREDA Education school and city planning guide · Reviewed 7 October 2026

Start with the child and the family’s practical constraints

Identify the curriculum, support and daily care the child needs before choosing a city.

  • Record age, current grade, curriculum and subjects, recent results, English experience and intended entry date. Ask each school to confirm grade placement and curriculum continuity.
  • List constraints that are difficult to change: parents’ work locations, siblings’ schools, weekday companionship, health or learning support, and the full-year budget.
  • Write a weekday caregiver, possible home, school-run contact and backup plan for each city. Add a separate travel plan if a parent works across cities or borders.
  • Ask the child which subjects, activities and friendships matter, and record their views on changing schools, boarding or a new environment.

Turn the city name into an actual campus plan

The Johor Bahru scope here includes Iskandar Puteri. The Kuala Lumpur scope includes Greater KL campuses whose Selangor locations must be explicit. Use school addresses to plan daily life.

Johor Bahru and Iskandar Puteri

Plan around the chosen Johor campus

Both Marlborough College Malaysia and the Sunway example in this guide are in Iskandar Puteri. Check the actual school entrance, proposed home and care arrangement together.

  • Record a parent’s Johor or Singapore work commitments and where the child stays on every school night.
  • For boarding, confirm the available model, grades, places and holiday arrangements school by school.
  • For cross-border travel, test the complete journey and keep a local care backup.

Kuala Lumpur and Greater KL

Plan around the child’s grade and campus

ISKL is in Ampang Hilir, Kuala Lumpur. Alice Smith’s primary campus is on Jalan Bellamy in Kuala Lumpur; its secondary campus is in Seri Kembangan, Selangor. Each stage needs its own route.

  • Confirm the campus for the child’s grade before selecting a home or transport.
  • For siblings at different campuses, check their separate start, finish and pickup arrangements.
  • Confirm current bus routes, stops, available seats and after-activity return journeys.

Describe each option as “school + grade + campus + home + caregiver”. Geography examples do not establish the child’s admission eligibility or support fit.

Four school examples show what must be compared individually

Both locations offer different curriculum and living arrangements. These official examples identify questions; the child’s grade, subjects and support needs should determine the actual shortlist.

Marlborough College Malaysia | Iskandar Puteri

The school describes a British curriculum, IGCSE and IB Diploma pathways, alongside full, weekly and three-night day boarding. Check the curriculum stage and applicable boarding model separately.

Ask: which boarding model accepts this age and grade? Who handles weekends, exeats and holidays? What are the subject, English-support and fee arrangements?

Sunway International School | Sunway City Iskandar Puteri

This campus is on Jalan Persiaran Medini 3. The IB directory identifies the school’s authorised programmes, while the school describes current provision. Match the information to the child’s stage and actual class.

Ask: which curriculum and grade apply to this intake? What subjects, teaching and language support are available? Use Iskandar Puteri information rather than transferring details from another Sunway campus.

ISKL | Ampang Hilir, Kuala Lumpur

ISKL’s High School page describes IB Diploma and ISKL High School Diploma pathways, and a Global Impact Diploma scheduled to launch in August 2027. Confirm the child’s intended intake and subject combination. Its admissions page requires full-time residence with at least one parent and states that ISKL does not sponsor student or guardian visas.

Ask: which pathway fits the existing results and subjects? What are the course prerequisites? What learning and language support can a new student access?

Alice Smith | Jalan Bellamy and Seri Kembangan

The Sixth Form page describes A Levels, and the secondary campus is in Seri Kembangan. Different primary and secondary addresses show why the school name alone cannot identify where the child studies.

Ask: which campus serves this stage? How are subject choices, transfer continuity and assessment handled? How can transport work for siblings on separate campuses?

Develop the shortlist with the Johor Bahru guide and Kuala Lumpur guide, then request replies for the child’s circumstances.

Who provides care on weekdays, weekends and holidays?

Check the responsibilities of day-school and boarding arrangements separately, beyond whether a parent can occasionally visit.

  • Day school: assign breakfast, school runs, after-school care, homework, health issues and school communication. Name an alternative contact if the usual caregiver cannot attend.
  • Boarding: ask about eligible ages, places, daily care, parent communication, health contacts, weekends and school closures. Record additional costs.
  • Weekly or partial boarding: plan departures, returns, the remaining nights at home and what happens if travel is interrupted.
  • Let the child understand the actual daily timetable during a visit. Discuss independence and support before deciding the care model.

Marlborough’s published models demonstrate why boarding checks must name the school and arrangement. Confirm provision separately at every other shortlisted school.

How should school runs and parents’ travel be checked?

Test the complete school day and allow room for rest, activities and backup transport.

  • Travel from the proposed home to the actual school entrance during start and finish periods. Record departure, arrival, return and after-activity arrangements separately.
  • School bus: confirm stops, current routes and seats, normal and activity-day journeys, fees, communication and missed-bus arrangements.
  • For Singapore–Johor travel, test the chosen transport, border clearance and local school run as one complete journey. A map’s single road segment does not establish a fixed daily journey for the child.
  • Create backups for both work and school: who responds to lateness, overtime, transport disruption or an early school closure?

Alice Smith makes bus seats subject to route availability and distinguishes normal dismissal from activity arrangements. Apply the questions elsewhere, while checking each school’s own service.

Compare full-year spending and initial cash separately

Request quotations for two specific schools using the same year, grade, student category and care model. Judge affordability from the complete plan.

Budget itemRecord for both options
School costsAnnual tuition, application and registration, required course and examination costs, language or learning support, applicable tax; record inclusions and valid year.
Care and housingBoarding or family housing, meals, after-school and holiday care. Check boarding inclusions to avoid double counting.
Transport and family travelSchool bus or daily school runs, activity-day returns, parents’ intercity / cross-border visits and backup transport.
Student and family arrangementsApplicable processing, insurance, documents and other required spending; confirm the individual circumstances with the responsible teams.
Initial cash and exit termsRefundable deposits, advance payments, refund rules, withdrawal notice and housing lease terms. Separate cash requirements from final spending.

This page does not assign a cost ranking to either city. The published Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur guides contain school-fee examples; obtain written quotations for the intended entry year before payment. Record totals and payment dates in the same currency.

Check admission and family residence arrangements separately

School acceptance, the child’s applicable student arrangements and the caregiver’s stay each require confirmation.

  • Ask the target school to confirm the child’s nationality, age, grade and documents are within its application scope, and identify its international-student team.
  • Use Malaysian Immigration’s school-category student and guardian guidance. Ask the school and relevant authorities to confirm personal circumstances, required documents and the order of steps.
  • If a caregiver needs to live or work locally, check their applicable status and activities separately. A child’s school offer does not establish another family member’s arrangements.

ISKL illustrates why this needs a school-specific check: its parent-residence and visa arrangements differ from simply assuming that every international school provides a student-pass route. Confirm the school’s current policy against the family’s actual status.

These are education-planning tasks. Record the responsible team’s reply and date, then schedule entry and relocation using the confirmed individual arrangements.

Make school visits useful for the decision

Take the same student profile and questions to the actual campuses in both locations so their answers can be compared.

  • Before visiting, share grade, curriculum, subjects, English and support needs. Ask which year-group, admissions and support staff can meet on the chosen day.
  • Curriculum: ask the school to explain grade placement, key subjects, assessment, language support and the later qualification pathway. Record unresolved conditions.
  • Daily life: see the applicable campus and boarding area; ask about the whole timetable, activity days, holidays, health communication and care responsibilities.
  • Test the proposed home-to-campus route on the visit day. Record the child’s and parents’ views separately, then request the missing written information.

Complete the family decision worksheet

Keep one workable option in each city and obtain clear replies for the material conditions before deciding.

Compare schools and curricula that fit the child, then check the actual campus, weekday care, travel and full-year budget. Parents’ existing work and living arrangements influence the choice. Use school replies and tested routes to assess each specific option, and involve the child.

Check the work location alongside the child’s complete school plan. Establish where the child stays on weekdays, who provides care and the backup for parents’ travel or transport disruption. Test the complete cross-border journey and confirm student and family arrangements separately.

Compare complete quotations for two specific schools in the same year, grade and student category. Include boarding or housing, support, school runs, parents’ visits and required processing. Record deposits and advance payments as initial cash needs. A city label does not determine the full cost.

Greater KL shortlists can include Selangor campuses. Alice Smith’s primary school is on Jalan Bellamy in Kuala Lumpur; its secondary school is in Seri Kembangan, Selangor. The actual grade-specific address affects housing, transport and siblings’ arrangements.

Check the actual campus’s authorised programme, grade, subjects already studied, assessment and teaching arrangements. A shared curriculum name does not establish identical subject combinations, entry dates or transfer conditions. Obtain the receiving school’s specific reply, especially during examination stages.

Check the school offer, the child’s student arrangements and the caregiver’s stay and activities separately. Use Immigration’s school-category guidance and confirm the individual circumstances and documents with the school and relevant authorities before scheduling entry, accommodation and relocation.
