Choosing an international school in Johor Bahru
Choose a Johor international school by checking the child’s entry grade, curriculum continuity, language and learning support, full budget and daily care together. A city label, school brand or headline tuition amount cannot establish suitability on its own.
An AREDA Education decision guide • Reviewed 7 October 2026
Start with the child’s actual entry point
A specific profile helps the school assess grade placement, support and available places.
- Record date of birth, current grade and curriculum, completed school years and intended start date. Ask how the school maps these to Year or Grade; a matching number does not establish equivalence.
- Gather recent reports, reading and writing samples, subjects already taken or in progress, and any identified learning-support needs.
- Name the next stage: continuing primary or secondary education, starting IGCSE, completing a high-school diploma or entering the IB Diploma. A transfer during an examination programme requires a review of subjects, content and assessment continuity.
- Separate first-year cash needs, recurring annual costs and potentially refundable deposits. Consider day school, boarding and family accommodation as different arrangements.
- Include the child’s views on learning, language, friendships and boarding in the shortlist criteria, alongside the practical care plan.
Use the Singapore–Malaysia education comparison for the country decision, then test that decision against actual schools.
Three campus examples to compare
These examples demonstrate a checking method, rather than an exhaustive list or ranking. Iskandar Puteri is in Johor’s wider Johor Bahru area; different campus locations need separate daily-life checks.
| School / campus | Verified pathway information | Questions for admissions |
|---|---|---|
| Marlborough College Malaysia; Iskandar Puteri | British curriculum, IGCSE and an IB Diploma Sixth Form. | Subjects at the intended entry point, day or boarding provision, English assessment and support costs. |
| Raffles American School; Iskandar Puteri | American High School Diploma route with Advanced Placement (AP) courses. | AP subjects actually running, graduation and transfer-credit requirements, and grade-specific language support. |
| Sunway International School; Sunway Iskandar / Iskandar Puteri | The IB directory lists authorisation information and coordinators for PYP, MYP, DP and CP. | Actual programme, subjects, entry point and support for the child; avoid borrowing another Sunway campus’s details. |
“Does the school have IB?” is only a starting question. PYP, MYP, DP and CP serve different stages and pathways. Confirm what the child would study and receive; a programme label does not establish an available support place.

2026/27 fee examples: align the grade and scope
These official annual MYR amounts illustrate budget checks. The grade labels do not automatically map across curricula, and the figures do not establish school fit.
| School / grade | Published base annual fee | With published 6% SST |
|---|---|---|
| Marlborough: Year 9 day pupil, 2026/27 | MYR 141,300 | MYR 149,778 |
| Raffles: Grades 9–12, 2026/27 | MYR 106,500 tuition | MYR 112,890 |
The calculation is base fee × 1.06, rather than a complete first-year quotation. Marlborough separately lists registration, acceptance and a refundable one-term deposit, with examinations and some activities charged additionally. Raffles separately lists application, placement, registration and later re-enrolment fees. Obtain written charges, refund terms and deposit conditions.
Raffles says meals are included in tuition. Inclusions differ, so compare more than one tuition column. Save the academic year, checking date and admissions quote; a 2027/28 entry needs that year’s schedule. Request current grade-specific Sunway Iskandar fees rather than using an older schedule or a Kuala Lumpur campus table.
Avoid a fixed SGD conversion or a blanket “half the Singapore cost” assumption. Record the exchange-rate date, payment charges and actual family arrangements for any cross-country budget.
Separate first-year cash from continuing costs
Fill this with school quotations. Mark unknown amounts as pending; the rows are a budget structure, rather than a Johor cost-of-living estimate.
| Item | Information to record |
|---|---|
| Education and tax | Grade, year and billing period; tax treatment and time-limited discounts. |
| Entry and deposits | Application, acceptance, registration and placement; refund and withdrawal-notice terms. |
| Required school items | Uniform, devices, books, examinations and language or learning support; existing inclusions. |
| Daily arrangements | Meals, transport, activities, boarding or housing, care and travel. |
| Immigration arrangements | Applicable procedures, responsible person, costs and renewals confirmed by the school and authority. |
| Payment and changes | Currency, transfer costs and adjustment terms; initial cash and continuing annual expenses. |
First-year cash needs combine education charges and applicable tax, entry fees, deposits and household arrangements. Include a refundable deposit in initial cash, then record its potential repayment separately; do not treat it as an automatic recurring permanent expense.
Check language support at the actual grade
Ask how assessment, lessons, progress reviews and capacity work for this intake.
Marlborough publishes separate Accelerated English and EAL arrangements with stage-specific provision and additional fees. Raffles lists EIP for Grades 3–10 and ELL for Kindergarten–Grade 10. These ranges do not establish equivalent provision elsewhere; ask admissions and the support team to assess the child together.
Ask whether support happens within mainstream lessons or separately, affects required subjects, and has a documented review process. For identified learning needs, agree what evidence the school needs. Read the support plan alongside subjects and timetables; Mandarin-speaking peers do not replace academic-English support.
Verify the daily routine before choosing a home
Place campus location, care, dismissal times and transport into a realistic weekly plan.
- Check the actual campus entrance and proposed home. Test the route during school arrival and dismissal before relying on it daily.
- Ask about transport service areas, stops, available seats and term charges. An existing route does not confirm service at your address.
- Identify who manages drop-off, collection, after-school care, sick days and holidays. A boarding option needs its own age, weekend and emergency-contact checks.
- For travel to Singapore, check each family member’s entry eligibility and border and transport arrangements separately. Do not promise a fixed cross-border commute.
- Arrange a visit or available trial experience. Observe breaks, work expectations and the language environment, then ask specific questions rather than judging learning quality from facilities photographs.
Build an application sequence from school replies
Rolling applications, available seats and qualification entry points are separate questions.
- Initial enquiry: provide age, grade, curriculum and intended intake, then ask which grade, place and application sequence the school can consider.
- Documents: follow the school’s identity, reports and school-record checklist, with support information where needed. Confirm translation and certification requirements.
- Assessment and visit: clarify tests, language review or interview, dates, charges and feedback. Assessment does not guarantee an offer.
- Offer review: check grade, curriculum, support conditions, full first-year quotation, deposits and withdrawal terms. Resolve unclear conditions in writing.
- Starting school: follow the school and authority’s instructions for immigration arrangements, accommodation, transport and arrival documents. Resolve material conditions before relying on assumptions.
Raffles publishes year-round applications subject to availability and asks for school records. Marlborough describes registration, assessment and interviews. Use the chosen school’s current reply to make the schedule; there is no universal one-year lead time or document list.
Check admission, student status and family arrangements separately
A school offer does not replace other approvals.
Malaysia’s Immigration Department distinguishes school-level and higher-education Student Pass and guardian arrangements. Confirm the applicable process, eligibility, documents and restrictions for the child and accompanying family with the school’s responsible team and the authority. Do not apply a university EMGS procedure to every school or assume automatic parental approval.
Before paying, record who handles each step, remaining conditions, deferral options and financial consequences. These are checking questions, rather than an approval prediction for an individual family.

Resolve an uncertain entry grade, support place or care arrangement before committing. The worksheet organises evidence and actions; it does not turn answers into a school ranking.

Discuss Johor school choices and application priorities
Share the child’s age, current grade and curriculum, recent learning records, English experience, budget and intended intake. AREDA can help organise education planning, school selection and admissions consulting questions.
