Choosing an international school in Kuala Lumpur

Choose a Kuala Lumpur international school by matching the child’s entry grade and next qualification with the actual campus, language and learning support, full budget and daily routine. Start with a child-specific shortlist, then ask each school to confirm the programme, support and available place in writing.

An AREDA Education decision guide • Reviewed 7 October 2026

Start with the child’s actual entry point

Write down the child’s learning needs and practical arrangements before comparing school names.

  • Record date of birth, present grade and curriculum, completed school years and intended start date. Ask each school to map these to its own Year or Grade; matching numbers alone do not establish equivalence.
  • Gather recent reports, subjects and assessment records, language experience and any learning-support information. Identify what must continue after the transfer.
  • Name the next qualification or transition. Moving partway through an examination programme needs a review of subjects, coursework and assessment continuity.
  • Set both an annual budget and first-year cash limit, with the family’s care and travel plan. Include the child’s questions and views in the shortlist criteria.

Compare actual campuses and curriculum pathways

These examples illustrate different locations and pathways. They form a starting comparison, rather than a complete directory or a ranking.

ISKL

Ampang Hilir, Kuala Lumpur

North American-based curriculum; high-school options include IB Diploma, Global Impact Diploma and ISKL High School Diploma.

Which route and subjects would the child take? How are previous credits, language and learning support assessed?

Alice Smith

Primary at Jalan Bellamy, Kuala Lumpur; Secondary at Seri Kembangan, Selangor

British curriculum for ages 3–18, with A Level study in Sixth Form. Primary and Secondary use different campuses.

Which campus serves this year group? Which subjects are available, and how would a later campus transition affect the family?

Garden International

Mont Kiara main campus and Desa Sri Hartamas Early Years Centre, Kuala Lumpur

Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form at Mont Kiara; Years 12–13 offer international AS and A Level qualifications.

Does this year group attend the main campus or Early Years Centre? Confirm the actual subjects, support and start date.

Seri Kembangan is in Selangor. Families often compare it within a wider Kuala Lumpur search, but the school name does not put every campus inside Kuala Lumpur. Use the address for the child’s stage when comparing homes, care and transport.

Match subjects and the next qualification

Ask what the child would study at the proposed entry year and how that connects with the next stage.

  • Request the current year-group curriculum map, subject choices and assessment approach. A school-wide curriculum label leaves important differences unanswered.
  • For IGCSE, A Level, IB or a diploma transfer, compare completed subjects, examination boards, coursework, prerequisites and graduation requirements with the receiving school.
  • If a future destination or course matters, check its official admission requirements against the proposed qualification and subjects. A school’s programme label does not establish every university’s entry rules.
  • Request written confirmation of courses actually running for the intake, any entry conditions and how the school handles gaps from the previous curriculum.

2026/27 tuition examples: align stage and scope

The following MYR figures are annual tuition from current official schedules. Year and Grade labels do not automatically map across curricula; these are specific budget examples.

School / published stageAnnual tuition, 2026/27What else to check
ISKL; Grades 6–8MYR 130,600School states 6% SST applies subject to current rules and exemptions; entry fees and required extras need a separate check.
Alice Smith; Years 7–9MYR 112,950 (three terms of MYR 37,650)Listed tuition excludes applicable SST. Confirm entry charges, deposit, multilingual support and other arrangements.
Garden International; Years 7–8MYR 118,170 (three terms of MYR 39,390)Published tuition excludes SST. Registration, deposit, support and excluded items need a separate check.

These are tuition amounts, rather than complete first-year quotations. Ask for the exact grade, academic year, payment periods, tax treatment and inclusions. Add entry charges, deposits, meals, bus, uniforms, devices, examinations, activities and any required support; avoid comparing one tuition column alone.

Keep refundable deposits in initial cash needs and record repayment conditions separately. Ask about withdrawal notice, fee increases, payment deadlines and deferral. For a later intake, obtain that year’s schedule; record a dated exchange rate and transfer charges if budgeting in another currency.

Verify language support for the intended grade

Ask about assessment, actual provision, capacity, timetable, review and cost for this intake.

ISKL states that Grades 3–12 require a minimum English proficiency level, while Prep Reception through Grade 2 has no minimum English entry level. Garden International’s fee table separately lists EAL programmes for Years 7–9, and Alice Smith lists a termly MLL programme fee for Years 7–13. These published ranges and charges do not establish a place or the right support for an individual child; ask each school to assess the child and confirm provision.

Ask whether support takes place in mainstream lessons or separately, affects subject choices, and has a documented progress review. For learning differences, ask the relevant team which records it needs and whether it can meet the child’s needs at this intake. Read the written support plan alongside the timetable and quotation.

Test the weekly routine against the campus

Build a manageable daily plan using the exact address, school hours, care needs and transport options.

  • Check the campus entrance and proposed home. Test the route during arrival and dismissal before relying on a map estimate or advertised journey time.
  • Ask transport staff about current service areas, stops, travel times, fees and seats. Alice Smith says routes can change and full buses can have a waiting list; verify your actual address and intake.
  • For children at different campuses or stages, check both school schedules and who handles each journey. Include future campus changes in the housing decision.
  • Confirm collection after activities, sick-day care, school holidays and a backup adult. Visit the school where possible and ask the child about classroom pace, breaks and the language environment.

Build the application sequence from school replies

Availability, year placement, assessment and offer conditions are separate checks.

  • Enquire with age, present curriculum, grade and intended intake. Ask which campus and year group can consider the child, whether places exist, and whether there is a waiting pool.
  • Follow the current school checklist for reports, identity, references, health and support records. Confirm translation or certification requirements and who reviews the documents.
  • Clarify assessment or interview steps, language review, fees and feedback. Applying or completing an assessment does not guarantee an offer.
  • Before accepting, check the grade, campus, subjects, support conditions, dated quotation, payment deadline, withdrawal rules and start date in writing.

Check student and family eligibility before committing

Admissions and permission to live and study in Malaysia are separate checks.

ISKL’s admissions page states that it does not sponsor student visas and requests work or residence documentation. Families should check their actual situation with its admissions team before relying on this school as an option.

For every shortlisted school, ask which current student and accompanying-family arrangements apply, who handles the process, what remains conditional and what happens if the planned start is delayed. An offer alone does not resolve these requirements.

Start with actual campuses and programmes that fit the child’s grade and family routine. ISKL, Alice Smith and Garden International are examples in this guide, rather than a complete list or recommendations. Confirm places and support at the proposed entry point.

The school lists its Primary Campus at Jalan Bellamy in Kuala Lumpur and Secondary Campus at Jalan Equine in Seri Kembangan, Selangor. Confirm the campus for the child’s year group and plan travel for that location.

The official 2026/27 annual tuition examples here are MYR 130,600 for ISKL Grades 6–8, MYR 112,950 for Alice Smith Years 7–9 and MYR 118,170 for Garden International Years 7–8. These stages differ. Add applicable tax, entry charges, deposits and other required items to obtain a complete first-year quotation.

Schools assess language needs and may set grade-specific proficiency requirements or support conditions. ISKL states a minimum English requirement for Grades 3–12. Ask each school to assess the child and confirm current support capacity before relying on an application.

Match completed subjects and assessments to the proposed year group, courses and next qualification. Ask the receiving school to review records and explain prerequisites, coursework or graduation gaps in writing.

Confirm the actual stop, seat, timetable and charges for the intake. Test arrival and dismissal routines and include after-school care, siblings and later campus changes. A bus network does not guarantee service at a particular address.
